New canal shortens shipping distances by 350 miles
China has opened the Pinglu Canal, a new waterway that shortens the shipping route from parts of southwestern China to the sea by 350 miles.
China Daily reports:
The Pinglu Canal — a mammoth project designed to fast connect China’s inner regions in the southwest with the sea — opened to traffic for navigation on Sept 16 in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, enabling vessels with a draft of 5,000 metric tons to travel freely in its 134.2-kilometer waterway…
As the Pinglu Canal becomes navigable, goods from the southwestern region and South China can directly reach the sea via this route, shortening the inland voyage by over 560 kilometers compared to traditional maritime routes.
The canal cost $11 billion and took four years to build. Vessels up to 5,000 metric tons can use the canal.
The longest and deepest undersea tunnel is now being built in Norway.
A vast undersea tunnel is also being built in the Baltic Sea south of Denmark, but that tunnel is only 11.2 miles long, not quite as long as the 16.6 mile tunnel being built in Norway.
