No, Republicans, Joe Biden did not call President Donald Trump “George” in a basement broadcast from the weekend.
People may think they saw Biden do that in the video clip that has gone viral, noted earlier by LU’s Ben Bowles.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
But the mainstream media want you to know that’s not what happened. An indignant Washington Post spoke out on Monday to clarify for readers that the tweeted clip “isolated part of the video, excluding key context.”
The Post sets video clips side by side and demonstrates conclusively that what the Republicans’ video clip left out was the moderators who were interviewing Joe Biden in the online broadcast. The moderators were Ana Navarro, and George Lopez.
Says the Post: “Starting the clip when the moderators were no longer on the screen, Steve Guest eliminated key context by removing the most obvious George that Biden could be referring to — George Lopez — and filled in the gap with an answer better suited to an attack ad.”
It’s not impossible, although the “George Lopez” theory isn’t a slam-dunk either. It may or may not look to viewers like Biden is addressing “George” Lopez, his interlocutor.
Here, again, is the transcript Ben posted in his earlier article.
This is the most consequent [sic] not because I’m running but because who I’m running against. It’s the most consequential election, uh, in a long, long, long time, and the character of the country in my view is literally on the ballot — what kind of country we’re going to be. Four more years of George, uh… George, uh… he, uh, gonna find ourselves in a position where if, uh, Trump gets elected we’re gonna be, uh, we’re gonna be in a different world. …
The presence of George Lopez may have been why Biden said “George,” when it frankly sounds like he meant to say “four more years of Trump.” A mental glitch that could happen to anyone, right?
Granted, it doesn’t happen nearly as often to people who aren’t experiencing the onset of dementia. We’re happy to provide the Washington Post’s explanation and let the reader decide.
