Drone strikes kill 306 people
“Drone strikes killed at least 306 people in three weeks” in Sudan, reports the United Nations. “The strikes, attributed to both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)” and its adversary, the “Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hit homes, markets, hospitals, displacement sites, power stations and water sources in Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile, Khartoum and other states.”
“Between 6 and 10 October,” government drone strikes hit “shelters for displaced people in Ghubeish and El Nuhud in West Kordofan” which “killed at least 25 civilians, including women and children.”
On 9 October, an “RSF drone struck a crowd of displaced people engaged in artisanal gold mining near a displacement site in Abu Shendi, Blue Nile, killing at least 31 people, most of them women and children.”
“On 18 October, at least 139 people were killed when a transportation truck was hit in a “double tap” repeat strike in Dibab, West Kordofan, an area controlled by the RSF militia.”
“Markets and hospitals have also been hit, including an RSF-attributed strike on Um Darfa hospital in Blue Nile on 11 October that seriously injured two health workers and left the facility non-operational.”
Thousands more were killed by drones earlier this year. In September, RSF drones attacked a crowded courtroom and college.
Poison gas was recently used by Sudan’s military, violating international law. Sudan’s military is in a bitter civil war with its adversary, the Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations notes that “Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed genocide in the western city of el-Fasher, carrying out mass killings, gang rapes and deliberate starvation as part of an intentional policy, a United Nations investigation has found. The UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan released its findings” in July, “concluding that the RSF’s systematic campaign of violence against civilians during and after its siege of the capital of North Darfur state amounted to genocide.”
The genocide was mainly aimed at the Zaghawa people, who live in the far west of Sudan and in the eastern part of the neighboring country of Chad.
The RSF also have committed genocide against the Masalit people of Darfur in western Sudan, before and after seizing the major city of El Geneina. The RSF has kidnapped thousands of people and held them for ransom, torturing many of them. The RSF has killed at least 250,000 people from non-Arab ethnic groups in Sudan’s western Darfur region.
Sudan’s civil war has already killed at least 400,000 people.
