The Trump administration may be taking aim at racial preferences and DEI policies, but such policies persist at many medical schools. Campus Reform reports that “students at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine recently recited” a DEI oath at a “school ceremony in May”:
The oath says that “We will combat healthcare disparities by confronting our biases”, “amplifying marginalized voices”, acknowledging the “injustices of our profession,” and “providing care” with “cultural humility.”
Campus Reform adds that
In June 2022, Do No Harm filed a federal civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights against UC College of Medicine.
The organization alleged that the school’s “Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program” unlawfully discriminates based on race, color, or national origin, in violation of Title VI…The program provides stipends of up to $1,500, networking opportunities, and mentorship, but restricts eligibility to students “from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.” The university explicitly identifies these groups as “Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.”
Do No Harm is a medical and policy advocacy group that opposes DEI efforts in medicine and “youth-focused gender ideology” for minors…UC is not alone in prioritizing DEI in medical education. In February, a Brown University faculty promotion placed “[d]emonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion” as a “Major Criterion,” while “exceptional clinical skills” were only “Minor.”
Critics argued that Brown’s standards elevate ideology over medical performance. Bob Cirincione, an orthopedic surgeon, stated earlier this year that the standards “say what DEI in medical schools is all about,”and that “it’s not about clinical performance.”
Limiting scholarships based on race appears to violate federal appeals court rulings such as Podberesky v. Kirwan (1994), which struck down a scholarship for black students at the University of Maryland, despite Maryland’s history as a segregated state.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) staff harbor high levels of antisemitism, reports The College Fix.
A study by a California State University professor found that an increase in “diversity, equity and inclusion” policies at a college is linked to rising opposition there to free speech. “The rise of DEI bureaucracies has actually coincided with the beginning of a ‘Free-Speech Crisis on College Campuses,’” noted the study.
College DEI staffers encourage illegal discrimination against whites and Asians. For example, at the University of California at Los Angeles, the Director of Race and Equity advocated denying white employees leave because of their race. That director, Johnathan Perkins, also claimed that “every white person is racist to some degree”, and falsely claimed that “white people cannot be victims of racism,” and “only white people can impose racist harm.” These claims disregarded court rulings finding that whites can be victims of racism and nonwhites can act illegally in committing racist acts. Perkins tells whites not to wish him a “Happy Juneteenth” because he will “flip tf out” if they do. He reacted to the death of England’s Queen Elizabeth by saying,“Good riddance.”
