Ukraine’s Surprise Drone Strike Shuts Down Moscow Airports As US Experts Warn, ‘It Could Happen Here’

Ukraine executed another bold drone assault deep inside Russian territory on Sunday, temporarily shutting down two of Moscow’s busiest airports.

The strike not only demonstrated Kyiv’s growing reach but also raised alarm bells among U.S. national security experts, who warn America could be just as vulnerable to such a surprise attack. (RELATED: Ukraine’s Covert Drone Strike Marks Dire Warning For US)

Russian air defense systems intercepted multiple drones flying toward Moscow, prompting authorities to shut down Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports early Sunday morning. Both airports resumed operations later that day.

Russia said it was advancing into Ukraine’s eastern Dnipropetrovsk region. The move came amid stalled peace negotiations and a failed prisoner exchange agreement that had been brokered just days earlier in Istanbul.

Earlier, Ukraine mounted a surprise strike on Russia’s strategic bomber fleet that not only shattered Moscow’s air capabilities but also exposed a lapse in Russian intelligence and defense preparedness. It launched a surprise drone attack that destroyed nearly a third of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet in a single day, in an operation personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after 18 months of secret planning.

Ukraine had covertly smuggled containerized drones into Russian territory over several months. The drones were then remotely activated on June 1, targeting critical Russian military infrastructure, including bomber fleets and air bases. The same containerized drone systems used by Ukraine could, in theory, be deployed within U.S. borders by a foreign adversary or terror group, bypassing conventional defenses.
