Under Biden, NSF spent over $2 billion imposing DEI on scientific research

“The federal government has spent over $2 billion dollars over the last three years infusing and embedding diversity, equity and inclusion concepts into scientific research – tainting the efforts with ideology and diminishing discoveries,” reports The College Fix.

The National Science Foundation has spent that much tax money on “projects that divide Americans and support investigations or publications that are of questionable scientific value,” states a 43-page report issued by Ted Cruz, ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

An opponent of DEI in STEM, Anna Krylov, laments this political misuse of taxpayer money by the NSF. “Instead of funding science, they dump money into pseudoscience, miseducation, and ideological indoctrination,” she says.

Senator Cruz’s report says the problem began at the “beginning of the Biden-Harris administration.” Citing the report, The College Fix notes that the NSF, following Biden-Harris policies,

“increasingly funded research and programs that color scientific investigation and engagement projects through the lens of political ideology, undermining objective hard science disciplines…in which facts and theories can be precisely measured, tested, and independently reproduced.”

From January 2021 through April 2024, the NSF awarded 3,483 grants amounting to more than $2.05 billion to “questionable projects that promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) tenets or pushed onto science neo-Marxist perspectives about enduring class struggle,” the report states.

Under Biden, the Education Department recently issued a DEI rule for government grants, incentivizing the unconstitutional use of racial classifications.

A recent study finds that a vast DEI bureaucracy is harming our armed forces.

DEI efforts fuel censorship and violations of the First Amendment. A study by a California State University professor found that an increase in “diversity, equity and inclusion” policies at a college is linked to rising opposition to free speech.

“The rise of DEI bureaucracies has actually coincided with the beginning of a ‘Free-Speech Crisis on College Campuses,’” notes the study.

The study was by Kevin Wallsten, a political-science professor at California State University at Long Beach.

“It was clear from the start that, regardless of what was on their websites, DEI bureaucracies were more likely to suppress than encourage free expression on college campuses,” the study observes.
