North Carolina State University is doing damage control after it attracted criticism for its decision to distribute sexually explicit packets that normalized group sex. The packets encouraged incoming students “to track how how many ‘orgasms’ they experience,” reported Campus Reform, and included “materials on ‘group sex'”:

Included in the welcome packet were condoms, lubricant, and information discussing various sexual topics, such as group sex and one-night stands, according to local news outlet WRAL.

The school ceased distribution of the packets after receiving various parental complaints….Some of the categories shown are “relationship type,” with options for “one-night stand” and “situationship,” as well as “# of orgasms.”

“In partnership with CVS, NC State distributes these packs to each incoming student class to provide them with healthy snacks, home care products, and self-care aids as they acclimate to campus,” the university said in response to the criticism. “University Housing has been made aware of a questionable flyer from a condom manufacturer included in the packs and has stopped distribution of the packs. Our team has also alerted CVS of the issue.”

Normalizing group sex is a bad idea, since such behavior is especially likely to spread sexually-transmitted diseases, as is promiscuity.

Yet the University of Wisconsin recently told students that polyamory has “many benefits.”

Other colleges like the University of Oregon have normalized group sex. A sex-toy shop was advertised as “gender affirming care” by the University of Oregon. The shop says that “queerness is about disrupting hetero-patriarchal spaces and challenging the status quo.” The shop’s blog posts include “Three, or Four, or Maybe More!” — a guide to “Threesomes, Foursomes, and Moresomes” — and “The Best Buy for Your Booty,” which offers an anal toy collection in celebration of “Anal August.”

To kick off its annual “sex week”, Harvard University provided instruction on how to have anal sex.

If you are a student at a progressive college, and you talk about sex in ways that inadvertently offend a listener, you may end up being disciplined for sexual harassment, as has happened to some heterosexual male students. But college officials themselves talk about the most graphic and offensive sexual subjects, even when it is unrelated to pedagogy or the curriculum. That seems like a discriminatory double standard.
