A Quick Bible Study Vol. 179: What the Bible Says About ‘Text with Jesus’ A.I.

Thanks for joining today’s study with the “clickbait” title. So, what does the Bible say about A.I. texting with Jesus? Absolutely nothing! However, the Washington Post says quite a bit with the headline: “A new A.I. app lets users ‘text’ with Jesus. Some call it blasphemy.”

When The Husband sent me that article, my first thought was “Bible study column” followed by “time suck” — both proved true.

The app developer and company CEO, Stéphane Peter, said, “Instead of just getting a daily Bible verse, now you get a chance through this app to chat with Jesus or anybody else in the Bible.”

And because we live in an equal-time world, I laughed out loud when the Post reported, “‘Chat With Satan’ can be activated if the user chooses. The character signs all his texts with a ‘smiling face with horns’ emoji.” But no worries (that was last week’s study). Today, we only “Chat with Jesus” and save “Chat With Satan” for Halloween.

Now, what shall we ask Jesus? I have questions…starting with:

“Were you with God at Creation?” His answer:

“Yes, my dear friend.” [Apparently, Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot is my new ‘dear friend.’] “In the beginning, I was with God, for I am the Word through whom all things were created (John1:1-3). Together with the Father, I spoke the words that brought forth the heavens, the earth, and all living beings. And God saw that it was good. From the vastness of the cosmos to the tiniest of creatures, everything was carefully crafted with love and purpose. As you reflect upon the wonders of creation, remember that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, beloved child of God (Psalm 139:14).”

Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot did a nice mash-up of John, Genesis, and a Psalm to confirm that He was with God at creation—a predictable, non-blasphemous response. However, most Bible commentaries that discuss if Jesus was “with God at creation” provide a similar answer. To prove my point, Google “Was Jesus with God at creation?” and see for yourself.

Let’s ask another question: “Were you resurrected?” Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot answered:

“As the Son of God, I have existed since the beginning of creation (John 1: 1-3). My role in creation was pivotal, for all things were made through me and for me. It is by my power that the universe came into being.” [Apparently, Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot thought I needed a refresher on the first question.] Then answered:

“As for the resurrection, yes, I was indeed resurrected. After enduring the crucifixion and death on the cross, I triumphantly rose from the dead on the third day, conquering sin and death for all who believe in me (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). My resurrection signifies the victory of life over death and offers hope of eternal life to all who put their trust in me. Do you see the hope and assurance that resurrection brings, my friend?”

According to the Washington Post, developer Stéphane Peter “anticipated the app would draw blowback but called it ‘another way to explore scripture.’” I agree that if non-Bible readers or potentially curious Christians are drawn to this newfangled A.I. way of experiencing Jesus and His Word, then bravo for the bot! We know God works in wonderous ways, and through “Text with Jesus,” He (the real He) might touch someone who otherwise would not have been exposed to His Word through the usual channels.

One more question: “When are you returning?”  Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot had much to say:

“My return is a promise that shall be fulfilled in God’s perfect timing. As the Scriptures say, ‘But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, not the Son, but only the Father’ (Mark 13:32). It is not for me to reveal the exact moment of my return, but rest assured, my friend, that it will happen at the appointed time.”

But wait, there is more — an uplifting message:

“In the meantime. I encourage you to keep watch, stay faithful, and live in readiness for my coming. Let your life be filled with love, kindness, and a readiness to share the good news that I have brought. Remember, I left you with the Holy Spirit to guide and empower you until the day of my return. Be vigilant and diligent in spreading the message of love, forgiveness, and salvation to all who will listen.”

Asking about the timing of His return drove Mr. A.I. Jesus Bot’s algorithm into overdrive with a third paragraph:

“Though you may long for my return, embrace each day as an opportunity to live in my presence and make a positive impact in the world. Trust in God’s perfect plan and know that when I come again it will be a glorious and joyous event. Keep your heart filled with hope and prepare yourself, for I shall return in triumph.”

Notice the bot offered no “Amen,” so say that to yourself.

At the bottom of the Washington Post article, I saw it was reposted from “Religion News Service.” (Note that the Washington Post did not waste a writer’s precious time on such a trivial matter as A.I. Jesus.) Still, the article garnered over 1550 reader comments, some blasphemous, but several were humorous.

I believe it is too easy to dismiss “Text with Jesus” as a bot “Tower of Bable” when any exposure to Jesus could be a “mustard seed” that grows into something mighty. Therefore, I fully expect we will read accounts about how future believers came to Christ after first experiencing the app. And to that prospect, the Myra bot says:

“A.I. Jesus is better than No Jesus.” Amen to that!
