Some progressives oppose jailing any criminal, even when their own relative is killed by the criminal in question. This means that even if violent crime skyrockets, directly affecting them, they will continue to support soft-on-crime policies, out of ideological opposition to arrests and incarceration. They are just that radical.

As a law professor notes, “Social justice warrior/anarchist/baker Jen Angel was recently dragged to death by a smash-and-grab robber.  The victim was well known for her opposition to incarceration.”

Her family and friends responded to the killing by publicly opposing the arrest and prosecution of those who killed her. As Democracy Now explains:

Longtime activist, writer and beloved baker Jen Angel has died at the age of 48. She owned the popular community-based Angel Cakes in Oakland. She was a pioneering force in independent media, co-founding Clamor magazine and Agency, an anarchist media organization. She was also a longtime organizer of the Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair. Jen Angel was actively involved in antiwar and anti-capitalist struggles through the years, including Occupy Wall Street. She died after she was critically injured in a violent robbery in Oakland earlier this week.

In a statement Angel’s family and friends wrote, “We know Jen would not want to continue the cycle of harm by bringing state-sanctioned violence to those involved in her death or to other members of Oakland’s rich community. As a long-time social movement activist and anarchist, Jen did not believe in state violence, carceral punishment, or incarceration as an effective or just solution to social violence and inequity.” Jen Angel’s family has asked that traditional prosecution be avoided in her case, and alternatives such as restorative justice be employed instead.

The International Business Times that Angel’s relatives oppose “arresting” her killers, after Angel

died after being robbed in a parking lot and from the injuries she sustained during the violent incident earlier this week.

The incident took place Monday….Angel was believed to be running errands for the store when she was attacked by the suspects. They approached her and blocked her with their car as she was leaving her parking spot…the robber smashed the passenger side window glass and appeared to take something from the car…At this point, Angel exited her vehicle and started to chase the robbery suspects on foot….Angel was pursuing the suspects and managed to reach the fleeing vehicle. However, she got caught in the door and was dragged by the speeding vehicle for more than 50 feet before falling on the street. Her head collided with the ground several times…Angel was taken to the Highland Hospital after she failed to respond to commands from emergency responders….Angel died….Wednesday after being “medically declared to have lost all brain function” by doctors who said they don’t expect her to regain consciousness….

Her friends and family aren’t in support of arresting the ones involved in Angel’s death.
