Homicide rates have risen at 10% on average over the last year in nearly all of the 50 most populous cities in the U.S., according to data released Wednesday.
Research published by WalletHub found that homicides increased significantly between the third quarter of 2021 and Q3 2022 in the largest U.S. cities. The results from the study aligned with previous research that found Democrat-run cities have had a higher increases in homicides than cities run by Republicans. The methodology used by WalletHub to identify the trend in homicides was built from a three-part analysis of homicide rates in Q3 2022, changes in homicide rates between Q3 2021 and Q3 2022 and changes in homicide rates Q3 2020 and Q3 2022.

Kansas City, Missouri; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Nashville, Tennessee; and Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced the largest increases in homicide rates over the past year, according to the report. Of those five, only Colorado Springs has a Republican mayor.
In several major cities, violent crimes on track to surpass the record set in 2021. By the midpoint of 2022, violent crime in New York City was up 25.8% compared to the same point in 2021. Even once-idyllic tourist towns like Santa Monica, California, are now ranked as some of the “least safe” in the nation.
