It’s not a good place to be if you are a contender for the Democratic nomination who once led the rest of the field — and Donald Trump — by double digits in the polls. But the sad reality for former Vice Pres. Joe Biden is that his base is rapidly deserting him.

Biden was met with chants of “Drop out, Joe!” on Thursday as he left a fundraiser in New York City, according to Fox News. But it didn’t just stop there.

… [P]rotesters from the group New York Communities for Change held a mock “funeral” for Biden’s candidacy, featuring a black coffin decorated with Biden 2020 stickers.

“The campaign is pretty much done,” one “mourner” said. “The people have spoken. Young people have spoken.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

If that pill isn’t bitter enough to discourage the one-time frontrunner, his leads in the two primary states he is ahead in — South Carolina and Texas — have shrunk dramatically according to today’s RealClear Politics averages. In South Carolina, his lead is down to 6.5 points, and in Texas it is down to 5.3.

And it get worse. Fox Business reports that “behind the scenes, the word from the party’s fat-cat set is that the Biden campaign may already be lost.”

“I feel sorry for Biden,” said Leon Cooperman, a billionaire hedge fund investor who has supported Democrats in the past despite being critical of President Obama. “He should withdraw; he has no chance.”

Like Cooperman, these executives — who work at hedge funds, on Wall Street and in real estate — cite as evidence several factors including Biden’s poor showing in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. They say that much of the money delivered to the Biden campaign as part of Thursday fundraisers at New York City restaurants Sarabeth’s and The Wayfarer was earmarked before his big losses in Iowa and New Hampshire and that big donors have more recently pulled back.
