I’ve always been inspired by fashion. My grandmother, my mom — they were always stylish. I grew up loving fashion, but there was a limit to the ways in which I could express myself. When you’re black and you’re gay, one’s masculinity is in question. I dealt with a lot of homophobia in relation to my clothing choices.
What remains to be explained is why “Sesame Street” feels the need to have Taylor model his fashion in front of toddlers. Perhaps it’s for the same reason that a big kerfuffle was raised in 2013 over the “sexuality” of Muppets Bert and Ernie after a “New Yorker” cover intimated that the best buddies were gay. Never mind that cloth puppets — and even ones that are made “anatomically correct” — are inanimate objects that have no sexuality. The magazine cover prompted deep, introspective essays in publications like the Washington Post explaining why Bert and Ernie’s sexuality mattered to LGBTQ people.
Billy Taylor will appear in his bizarre garment on “Sesame Street” because today’s “woke” liberal parents, which is who the show caters to, want it that way. Not content to let their children be children, they spirit them off to drag queen story hour at the local library.
This latest development is just par for the course.
