Some are hailing a woman in Alberton, S. Africa a hero, while others are calling her stupid. You can decide for yourself after watching a video of her dealing with armed carjackers who brazenly followed her into the driveway of her home.
The woman, who has chosen to keep her identity private, tells South Africa’s News24 that she did what she thought she had to to protect her teenage daughter, who was in the car with her. In any case, her split-second thinking not only thwarted the robbery. It forced the carjackers to flee the scene on foot, also providing visual information that would help authorities nab them two days later.
A police investigation found the group of men had followed her home from the local mall on Monday morning. Unbeknownst to her, she was followed to three separate locations; the hijackers only made their move as she signalled to enter her driveway.
“I was ready to open the boot to my car, when I saw the white car behind us.
“I told my daughter, ‘don’t get out, just close your door’. When I saw the men approaching us, and I saw their guns, I told her, ‘here comes trouble’.”
The video, which has since been viewed 135,000 times, tells what happened next.

According to police reports, the driver was in shock when they arrived, and the daughter had sustained minor bruises. Damage to her car, a Jeep Cherokee, is estimated at 150,000 rand ($9,900), which she claims is covered by insurance.
