The latest instance of the Left blaming an Obama-era failing on Trump to stir up base

In its never-ending quest to take down President Donald Trump at any price, the Left seemed to hit on something at the end of May: One of its more enterprising sorts found and ran a photo on social media that showed two young purported immigrant children sleeping on the floor of what appeared to be a locked gated enclosure. The photo went instantly viral and seeded the loud and angry protests against Trump’s inhumanity to immigrant children that have been a daily occurrence ever since.

The price of publishing this photo was, of course, the truth since the picture was taken in 2014, during Barack Obama’s presidency.

Although the strategy wasn’t successful in leading to Trump’s immediate ouster, liberals are giving it another try. This time the bait is a U.N. report claiming that poverty is drastically up in America and that Trump’s profligate military spending at the expense of social programs is the reason why.

The media have swallowed the story hook, line, and sinker. From Investor’s Business Daily:

An uncritical Reuters headline says it all: “America’s poor becoming more destitute under Trump: U.N. expert”. The Hill’s equally blase headline: “UN poverty official: Trump exacerbating inequality.”

The report — really a first-person narrative — released earlier this month, ripped President Trump for his “contempt” and “hatred of the poor.”

The report cited 18.5 million Americans who live in extreme poverty. …

The report itself is a little hard to square with recent economic developments that have been reported, among them a precipitous drop in the number of American families relying on food stamps and black unemployment at its lowest ebb since 1972.
