Due to a miscarriage of justice, Kate Steinle’s killer, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, is a free man. Sergio Jose Martinez is not so lucky, but then again he was deported twenty times while Zarate was deported only five.

According to Portland, Ore., station KATU:

Martinez sexually and physically assaulted a 65-year-old woman in NE Portland in the early morning hours of July 24, and then stole her car. Later that day, he assaulted a young woman at a NE Portland garage.

Previously, Martinez had been found guilty of felony burglary and had a series of probation violations for illegal crossings into the United States.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

In a very real sense, Portland, which is a sanctuary city, is complicit in Martinez’s crimes.

According to ICE officials, Martinez was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail in early December 2016. He was placed under a specific immigration detainer that would have required jail officials notify ICE prior to his release. That way, ICE officers could take him into their custody.

He was in custody as of Dec. 7, 2016 and let out the next day by Multnomah County officials “without providing any notification to ICE.

On Friday, Martinez was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He was convicted on charges of robbery, kidnapping and assault charges in connection with the parking garage attack, and on charges of robbery, burglary, sodomy, and sex abuse in connection with the early morning attack.
