Quick Takes

We (I) have been ‘had’ once again by a hoaxer

Mea culpa! Mea maxima culpa!

For readers who were following a breaking story about a security guard at the Mandalay Bay Hotel had been arrested in connection with the Las Vegas massacre, I regret to inform you it was a hoax.

The story, which ran in our Web Crawler section, has been pulled.

According to J.E. Dyer, who made me aware that the item (which is still live here) was a phony, noted that the perpetrators changed the name of the security guard from Jose Campos to Jose Compos. That appropriately is a letter short of compost.

I apologize for the misinformation and promise to try to do better.
