When liberal worlds collide: Nudists in Germany ordered to cover up so as not to offend who?
To prove the importance of the right to public nudity, a journalist removes her top during an interview.

If you have followed liberal crusades in recent years, you are aware that one of them is the right to walk around naked. Some sub-classes of the movement embracing public nudity have been woman-centric. “Free the Nipple,” one popular global initiative, aims to accord women the right to go topless, while “Project Vulva” … well, you can figure that one out for yourself.

While non-nudist libs of all stripes have bared some part of their anatomy as a show of solidarity with jaybirds, others have lined up to enforce the rights of another protected class: Muslims.

And what is one of the major precepts of Islam? Public modesty. Women in particular are required to cover up when heading out of the house.

So what happens when the nudies meet the prudies? That question was answered in Germany this past week, when the government informed nudists who swim in a lake outside of Dresden that they would need to begin wearing bathing suits because a refugee shelter was going up on the opposite shore to accommodate 112 asylum seekers.

According to the Indpendent, the requirement “is an affront to … followers of Germany’s Freikörperkultur (free body culture) or FKK movement, which embraces sport, naturism and communal living.”

Petra Hoffmann, a spokeswoman, is quoted as telling the Bild newspaper, “We refuse to display [sic] these rules,” she said. “On our site we decide what goes.”

Earlier this month, she said some naturists felt vulnerable after reading reports of sexual harassment by migrants at swimming pools in Germany.

Reports of sexual harassment and attacks by asylum seekers at swimming pools have generated controversy across Europe, sparking a ban on male migrants at one pool in Germany and “vigilante” patrols in Sweden.
