Feminism pioneer and publisher Gloria Steinem is 81, bless her heart, and still wears her hair like she’s 21. But nobody can accuse her of not being on top of current events. Steinem is not only cognizant of the deep doo-doo Planned Parenthood currently finds itself in but pretends, like any good liberal, not to know that the kerfuffle is over the organization’s sale of fetal body parts, not blanket denial of health care to women and not (as Steinem suggests) that concern over abortion is a “male thing.”
On Twitter, PP quotes Steinem:
“If [cis] men could get pregnant, #abortion would be a sacrament” – @GloriaSteinem
— Planned Parenthood (@PPact) October 19, 2015
Apart from the “us vs. them” sensibility the quote emodies, what does Steinem mean (or think she means) by including “[cis]” as a modifier, in square brackets no less. Granted, men born as men who self-identify as men can’t become pregnant. It is a biological impossibility. But neither can people born as females who self-identify as men, at least once they’ve undergone a plumbing change.
And what makes Steinem think she knows what’s in the hearts of all transgenders? “Caitlyn” Jenner, the most famous “trans” in America right now, self-identifies not just as a woman but as a conservative Republican. Why does Steinem assume that any human being “enlightened” enough to feel uncomfortable in the skin he was born in is perforce a liberal?
