A new petition posted Wednesday to the White House “We the People” website demands that charges of treason be brought against President Barack Obama. The petition cites three main reasons, including Obama’s actions in Libya and his actions regarding illegal immigrants. The petition also says Obama has given aid and comfort to America’s enemies.
The first charge says Obama surrendered “sovereign U.S. war-making to foreign powers and international authorities by attacking Libya without consulting Congress, in violation of U.S. Constitution Article 1, Section 8 and U.S. Code Title 50, Chapter 33:1541-1548.” In March 2011, Obama involved U.S. military forces in what he described as a “kinetic action.” The House of Representatives voted against Obama’s actions, prompting then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ask if Republicans sided with the Libyan people or dictator Moammar Khaddafi.
The second item on the petition says Obama should be charged with treason for “[r]efusing to secure our broken borders from illegal alien invasion, international criminal incursion, and terrorist cadre penetration, in violation of U.S. Constitution, Article III, Section 3 and Article IV, Section 4.” On July 20, the Washington Examiner said that some 2.5 million illegal aliens have entered the country during Obama’s time in the White House. Some 790,000 have entered since 2013, Paul Bedard said, citing the Center for Immigration Studies.
The third charge said Obama has given “aid and comfort” to enemies of the United States, “by consorting with, supporting and installing to powerful Federal positions persons who in writing, word and deed have called for and promoted” the overthrow of America’s constitutional government. This is not a new charge, as many — including some conservative leaders — have said Obama sides with Islamists. Just this week, radio talk show host Mark Levin called Obama the greatest threat America currently faces.
Former GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann said Obama has embraced the “agenda of Islamic jihad.” Former Rep. Allen West once said Obama is “aiding and abetting the enemies of the West.” He also called Obama an Islamist working against America’s security interests.
It’s not the first time Obama has been called a traitor, and it’s not the first petition demanding Obama’s ouster. In 2014, a retired Army officer called for an “American Spring” to remove Obama and other leaders of both parties from office. The protest went off as scheduled but did not succeed in removing anyone from office.
The petition requires 100,000 signatures by September 4 to trigger White House action. It’s highly unlikely, though, that Obama will surrender himself to law enforcement if the petition gathers the required number of signatures.
