I’m betting most of you didn’t know that 23 February is Defenders of the Fatherland Day in Russia. (Many of you probably thought they still referred to Russia as the Motherland over there, but try to keep up, please. It’s the less international-socialist, more warlike Fatherland now, for Russian cultural references.)
On Defenders of the Fatherland Day, all men, especially current and former uniformed defenders of the fatherland, reportedly have “the legal right to receive congratulations and gifts from their fairer counterparts.” This interesting feature of Russian culture sounds like a knife-throwing contest waiting to break out, and we’ll let the Russians work that out among themselves.
The bigger news about this year’s Defenders of the Fatherland Day is that a group of Russians celebrated it by demonstrating in Moscow with a mock ballistic missile, painted with this slogan:
