Just about any mainstream media headline will tell you all you need to know about the events in Ferguson, Mo., last night. “Fires, vandalism, gunfire follow grand jury decision in Ferguson,” CBS News reports. “Ferguson burning after grand jury announcement,” echoes USA Today. And so on, ad infinitum. There are videos and snapshots galore:
It could have been worse — police arrested 29, and much of the crowd had dispersed by midnight — but it should have been better. This is not to say the angry crowds should have quietly accepted the grand jury decision. That would have been out of character. Besides they were prepared to protest regardless of the outcome.
But imagine for a minute that last night’s “racially charged riots,” as Reuters puts it, had turned deadly. Imagine that in the mayhem that engulfed Ferguson another unarmed black had been shot and killed. Or two. Or three dozen. At what point do liberal talking heads and so-called “black leaders” accept that violence begets violence and that egging on the mob is counterproductive?
