It’s Michelle Obama’s worst nightmare. Well, second worst nightmare: Her first worst nightmare is the wholesale rejection of her school lunch program.
But this is close. Too close, in fact. A vending machine in the first lady’s home sells “jumbo honey bun” with 590 calories and 17 grams of saturated fat. To put that in perspective, the American Heart Association recommends limiting your saturated fat to 16 grams over the entire day for an adult consuming 2,000 calories. That means that a single Jumbo Honey Bun pretty shoots your entire daily fat wad. That’s bad news if you happen to be a devotee of French fries (“I love them,” the first lady confessed in 2009, adding, “Dearly. Deeply. I have a good relationship with french fries and I would eat them every single day if I could”).

In fairness, Mrs. Obama can’t be expected to be on top of every morsel of food in a building with six floors and 55,000 square feet of floor space. But by the same token, maybe she shouldn’t be trying to dictate what 45 million children eat or don’t eat each day.
