For those who missed the story, Sea World theme parks are under siege by animal-rights activists who maintain that training killer whales for the amusement of the human public is inherently cruel. The Wall Street Journal noted yesterday that SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. has unveiled plans to expand the habitats in which the mammals are housed.
Too little, too late, I say. This hardly makes up for the systematic torture of these proud beasts, some of whom have had their flesh seared with hot irons, while others were subject to ghastly, unspeakable experimentation. When the whales have outlived their usefulness, they are shuttled off to gas chambers passing for communal shower.
I didn’t read or hear anywhere that any of this happened. I am extrapolating these details from a tweet by Cher:
Some of the whales at Sea World?
Here is what Twitchy had to say about the tweet and the reaction of Cher’s 2.26 million followers:
We understand Cher’s anger about Sea World’s alleged mistreatment of its killer whales. We’re not sure, however, that likening the amusement park to the Dachau concentration camp is the best way to express it. Does she really believe that conditions for whales at Sea World are similar to the circumstances of a Nazi death camp in which tens of thousands of Jews and others were murdered?
As far as we can tell, none of Cher’s readers found the comparison distasteful. Perhaps this tweet helps explain why:
The tweet, by someone who Twitter handle is @HausOfHector_, reads simply:
Howard Portnoy has written for The Blaze, HotAir, NewsBusters, Weasel Zippers, Conservative Firing Line, RedCounty, and New York’s Daily News. He has one published novel, Hot Rain, (G. P. Putnam’s Sons), and has been a guest on Radio Vice Online with Jim Vicevich, The Alana Burke Show, Smart Life with Dr. Gina, and The George Espenlaub Show.
