Take 2: Lois Lerner takes 5th — again!

Take 2: Lois Lerner takes 5th — again!

“On Wednesday, Lois Lerner, the director of the IRS division that targeted conservative groups, invoked the Fifth Amendment when appearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, telling the committee she broke no laws and did nothing wrong, Fox News reported.”

The words are from an article by LU’s Joe Newby written last May. Today is Wednesday again. Lerner again appeared before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, where she again declined to testify, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

It’s dėja-vu all over again.

Yesterday, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) was interviewed by Fox News Channel’s Bill Hemmer. In it the exchange, the two addressed the enigma arising out of contradictory claims about Lerner’s willingness to testify. On Sunday, Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, told FNC’s Chris Wallace, that Lerner had indeed agreed to testify at Wednesday’s hearing. But her attorney, William Taylor, claimed he had no idea why Issa said what he did.

Lerner’s reticence today seems to clear up the confusion slightly. But it brings the American people no closer to the truth about the tax agency’s behavior, about who ordered it, and whether it had any chilling impact on Republican voters in the 2012 presidential election.
