Obama and wife groove thing
Mr. President, your groove thing is showing!

Gee, I wish they’d make their mind up! I already went ahead and had my dancing shoes resoled on the promise as of 4:30 p.m. that the White House evening of Latin music cum concert was on for tonight. At 4:30, First Lady and dancing fool Michelle Obama tweeted that the president “will shake his groove thing” in much the way Bush “shook his groove thing” after a massacre earlier in the day.

OK, Bush really didn’t shake his groove thing after a massacre. That was a joke that @CuffyMeh tweeted. As far as I know, W didn’t even have a groove thing.

But back to the first couple. Despite earlier reports that the concert, featuring Latinos Ricky Martin and Romeo Santos and Latina Gloria Estefan, would go forward despite the horrific events resulting in 13 dead at the Washington Navy Yard, the event has been canceled. There will be no dancing, no singing, no blaring brass … nada. The concert is finito.

The Washington Nationals have canceled their baseball game, and now the White House has elected to follow suit.

President Obama had obviously figured out that images of him “shaking his groove thing” are totally inappropriate after the day’s events which are still unfolding at this writing.

Earlier today, I was willing to bet that the show would go on. That the President would give a little solemn talk followed by a moment of silence for the victims before heading out on to the dance floor. Now, I’m glad no one took my up on the offer.

It appears after all that a national tragedy just a few miles away is enough for this White House to keep Ricky Martin from performing  Livin‘ La Vida Loca.

Live and learn!
