Barack Obama will be keeping kosher on Israel visit

Obama at the Wailing WallIn a poll conducted last October, a reported 18 percent of Americans said they believed that President Barack Obama is Jewish. Despite having a name in common with Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, Obama is not course a member of “the tribe.”

Yet, he will be eating like one on his upcoming trip to Israel. The Telegraph reports that the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, where the president is staying and presumably taking most of his meals, will have switched over to its Passover menu by the time he arrives on March 20.

Bread and most other grain products are forbidden during the eight days of the Jewish festival, meaning that “pasta dishes will be very much off the menu.” And matzoh, the unleavened bread, will be very much a staple of it.

The hotel’s manager, Dror Danino, told the newspaper Haaretz:

We’re used to hosting heads of state and also American presidents, but this situation is very special for us because it’s so close to Pesach [Passover].

Which is a kind way of saying that the 233-room hotel will be unable to make an exception for the presidential party.

The Telegraph’s Robert Tait writes:

Such strictures may be something of a trial for Mr Obama, who has been known to indulge in rich foods during political meetings. In 2010, he ate cheeseburgers with the then Russian president, Dimitry Medvedev, at a restaurant in Arlington, Virginia in what became known as ‘the burger summit’. Last November, he shared a lunch of white turkey chili and grilled chicken salad with the defeated Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, at the White House.

Maybe the president can take a cue from Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who brings along his own personal cook when he travels. If Obama does, he should probably avoid requesting that his chef take pointers from Ahmadinejad’s. On his visit to New York to speak at the U.N. in 2010, an entire floor’s worth of guests at the Hilton Manhattan East needed to be relocated, all of them driven off by the stench from the petty tyrant’s food.
