HS student goes undercover to catch backpack thief, nabs teacher

Justine BettiMany schoolteachers supplement their income with jobs outside the school. But for one California teacher, the extra cash was strictly an inside job.

ABC affiliate KXTV reports that a teacher, whose identity has not been revealed, was caught stealing money from backpacks thanks to the sleuthing efforts of an enterprising student at Linden High School who “went to the videotape.”

Following a rash of thefts that occurred during gym class, sophomore Justine Betti hid inside a locker with a video camera, hoping to nab the culprit red-handed. She did — and to her surprise it was her teacher.

“After all the kids left she stayed in there and went through people’s backpacks,” Betti said, adding, “I was like, oh my God, I can’t believe I got this on video and I couldn’t believe that I got it and I kept watching it over and over.”

Betti and several friends took the evidence to the principal, who — interestingly — instructed Betti to delete the video. By this point, she had sent a copy to her father.

The teacher has been placed on administrative leave and both the Linden School District and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department are investigating. So far, no criminal charges have been filed.

Betti claims the choice to turn the damning video over to authorities was tough because the teacher is popular. Other students agree. Linden sophomore Kellie Martinez told reporters, “Makes you feel like your privacy was invaded, but you know, you can’t help but feel bad for her, either … she was a great teacher.”

Here’s hoping the students are selective about which of the teacher’s “lessons” they choose to follow.
