The Ofcom toothless dog barks…

A slew of British television and radio stations have been cited as giving a friendly, yet illegal. platform to religious individuals who openly advocate murder and torture, reports The Telegraph.

The independent regulator of British mass communications, Ofcom has been authorized by Her Majesty’s government to act as a watchdog for the airwaves.

As stated on their website, they are also legally bound to ensure:

People who watch television and listen to the radio are protected from harmful or offensive material.

Tagged by The Telegraph as “preachers of hate,” Ofcom has ruled in cases released Saturday a series of rulings against broadcasters with a Muslim-targeted audience.

Examples include that of an imam “telling viewers that those who disrespect the prophet Mohammed should be killed, and another broadcaster saying homosexuals should be beaten and tortured.” Other specifics cited by Ofcom include:

  • An Islamic scholar who told viewers: “It is your duty … to kill those who insult Prophet Mohammed.”
  • A preacher banned from coming to Britain who used the channel – which he co-owns – to say anyone who left Islam should be put to death.
  • A phone-in presenter who advocated “eliminating” anyone who disrespected Mohammed.

No Fear Of Repercussions…

Earlier, a 2010 Ofcom investigation found Great Britain’s largest Islamic broadcaster, the Islam Channel:

Had continued to ignore Ofcom rules about impartiality and allowed controversial viewpoints to be aired despite a fine and other sanctions being imposed.

In another case of Ofcom simply being ignored, late last year “a Leeds radio station, Radio Asian Fever, was fined £4,000 for breaching broadcasting rules in programmes involving a presenter called ‘Sister Ruby Ramadan'” who instructed listeners that “homosexuals should be beaten and tortured.”

Specifically, Sister Ruby Ramadan stated:

If there are two such persons among you, that do this evil, the shameful act, what do you have to do? Torture them; punish them; beat them and give them mental torture.

Something’s Rotten In Edinburgh…

In a related case, three Scots face an unlimited fine or as many as seven years in prison for allegedly throwing bacon at an Edinburgh mosque.
