NRA chief slams Schumer for going back on word in re mental health records in gun background checks

Sugarcoating nothing, NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer a liar at CPAC Wednesday for not keeping a promise he made 25 years ago to include mental health records in gun purchase background checks.

“Here’s what I said on CBS way back in 1993. That was 25 years ago!” LaPierre said as he played a video clip of his 1993 appearance with Schumer on “Face the Nation,” which follows.

“Let me ask you this,” a much younger LaPierre asked a much younger Chuck Schumer in the video clip. “Are you in favor of computerizing the mental health records of people into a national computer bank?”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“You bet. You bet I am!” Schumer replied.

Extending his hand to shake Schumer’s, LaPierre asks, “Well, can we join hands on that and go to Capitol Hill right now?”

Shaking LaPierre’s hand, the smiling Schumer responds, “We can. We can.”

“Now, here’s the real tragedy,” LaPierre lamented to the CPAC crowd. “Charles Schumer shook my hand to get all the mental health records into the system, and then he went back to Capitol Hill and you know what he did? Absolutely nothing! How many lives might have been saved if he had just kept his promise? They are liars to the core!”

And I’ll make this prediction right now,” continued LaPierre. “A year from today many of those records may still not be in the system, not if some of these whining-for-television politicians and their media enablers have their way. Instead, what they’ll do is they’ll keep coming after the NRA and when another monster slips through the cracks, the very cracks that they’ve enabled in the system, as the records of prohibited persons remain out of the database (pausing, then shaking his head), it’ll happen again.”

I don’t think including mental health records in background checks is the answer for a couple of different reasons.

  1. A very slippery slope. The bar for being mentally today ill will likely be dropped to the floor if liberals have anything to do with it, so that eventually having an argument with a neighbor or family member may classify one as mentally ill, or maybe even a traffic ticket, or a late library book. Only crazy people do that kind of stuff, right? So, none of us will be able to buy a legal gun.
  2. How is it going to help? It is easier to buy guns from individuals or on the black market than from gun shops. No background checks. If a crazy person wants to kill people with a gun, he will find a gun. Buying guns is as easy as buying marijuana, which is as easy as buying tomatoes at a farmer’s market.

We have to secure our schools, fortify them. Make them as hard to enter as a military base. And be sure there are armed adults there, trained to neutralize maniacs bent on mass murder.
