Image of the Day: NYDN’s hateful message to bitter clingers

Seriously? This is really the best cover New York’s Daily News could come up with the day after a mass shooting that claimed 16 lives. (That’s if you include two of the assailants who were taken out by law enforcement.)

Up until 1991, the Daily News carried the slogan “New York’s Picture Newspaper,” a reference still hinted at in the iconic logo of an old-fashioned camera which still appears between the words “Daily” and “News” on the paper’s cover.

The paper, which decided to adopt a blatantly political (and left-leaning) stance on yesterday’s massacre, couldn’t even contain its glee over its cleverness until this morning when the edition hit the newsstands. Instead, its editors tweeted this preview out yesterday:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The headline, you will notice, is straddled by tweets from Republican presidential candidates who offered prayers for victims and their families.

The Daily News was not alone in demonstrating such insensitivity. The Atlantic, another left-leaning publication, had a piece out yesterday titled “Prayer Shaming After a Mass Shooting in San Bernardino” that included crude reactions by liberal writers like Zach Ford, “LGBT editor” for Think Progress, who tweeted:

It is curious that neither the Daily News nor the Atlantic waited until the president released his official statement on the shootings, which — if it is anything like his statement in July following shootings at a movie theater in Lafayette, La. — will include his “thoughts and prayers.”
