“We shall overcome.” That lyric from a Civil Rights-era anthem of the same name is getting a makeover at Brown University. A group of students there are conducting an on-campus workshop designed to assist “queer” (their term) minority students in overcoming their attraction to queer whites.
Campus Reform reports that a “Protect me from what I want” workshop, to be held on Apr. 8, will separate participants by race in order that they may work past their sexual attraction to (Heaven forbid!) Caucasians.
Campus Reform writer Timothy Dionisopoulos quotes from “an official Facebook description of the event” (since redirected to a general events page):
[We] find ourselves falling always for the white queers… wishing we could have more agency in the process, be more intentional about who we desire and how.
We are invested in generating a politics of sexuality that compels us to interrogate beauty as privilege and constructed by systems of white supremacy, ableism, capitalism, and heteronormativity.
The workshop will open with two artistic performances (what would any campus event be with “artistic performances”?). After that a discussion will take place. But in preparation:
We will break into POC [People of Color] and White caucus groups for a part of the workshop to unpack some of our specific experiences of racialized desire. This will be an intentional, anti-racist, and feminist space.
It’s hard to understand how a “space” that by its very description is segregated is also “anti-racist,” but ours not to reason why. A growing resentment toward “white privilege” on college campuses might be seen as justification for treating fellow students as second-class citizens — even if they are members of a “diverse” group, in this case “queer.” Anywhere else this would be called discrimination.
