aYesterday I asked rhetorically what would make Democrats happy, aside from canceling the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. Overnight, libs obliged. Broadway star Jennifer Holliday, who was scheduled to perform at the inauguration, announced that she was backing out, issuing an apology to her fans “for her lapse of judgment” and “for being uneducated on the issues.” Give her points for honesty.
Several other celebs have already performed but not for the inauguration but to oppose it. The Daily Mail notes that a bevy of Hollywood denizens, including Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, and Amy Adams, have pooled their “talents” for a recording of the disco classic “I Will Survive.” Get it?

A group that calls itself Refuse Fascism published a full-page anti-Trump ad in The New York Times on Jan. 4 and is planning a flash mob to surround the Trump Hotel in D.C. (Flash mobs are the “adult” version of holding your breath till you turn blue.)

Back in the semi-real world, seventeen Democratic Congress members have pledged to boycott the inauguration. One of them, Rep. [score]Jared Huffman[/score] of California, said that “with Donald Trump as our President, the United States is entering a dark and very dangerous political chapter,” adding:
I will do everything I can to limit the damage and the duration of this chapter, and I believe we can get through it. But I will not sit passively and politely applaud as it begins.
Another California congressman, [score]Mark DeSaulnier[/score] went so far as to make a videotaped statement, which he included in a tweet claiming that Trump will somehow be in violation of the Constitution when he takes the oath of office.

In case you feared that poets around the nation would remain silent on Jan. 20, some have announced “poetry slams” (those most literary of events). Some groups of poets have threatened to stage rallies, others “read-ins.” As the old saying goes, when you’ve lost the poets…
When all is said and done, Donald Trump will be elected the forty-fifth President of the United States, and all the noise and other silliness won’t have counted one whit.
