On Monday, three full days after the brutal execution-style murder of Harris County (Texas) Deputy Darren Goforth, Barack Obama finally got around to placing a phone call to the slain officer’s widow to offer his heartfelt condolences. He also released a statement in which he reiterated his unwavering dedication to the safety of our men in blue. (He neglected to mention our women in blue, which would be assailed as sexist if a conservative said it, but I digress):
As I said in my State of the Union Address, we’ve got to be able to put ourselves in the shoes of the wife who won’t rest until the police officer she married walks through the door at the end of his shift. That comfort has been taken from Mrs. Goforth. So we must offer her our comfort – and continue to stand up for the safety of police officers wherever they serve.
I’m not sure which SOTU the president had in mind, though I strongly doubt that it was the most recent one.
One detail Obama overlooked in his prepared remarks was Deputy Goforth’s “creepy perv eyes,” which somehow justified his murder. That angle wasn’t lost on #BlackLivesMatter supporter Monica Foy, who distinguished herself with a tweet that she has now deleted but lives on in retweets:
How does it feel to be famous? And how did the perp see his eyes shooting him from behind? @Monicafoycan pic.twitter.com/72gyc0lLII

The question raised by Stacey Lennox is certainly a trenchant one. All accounts of the killing state that Shannon Miles, the shooter, walked up behind the officer and opened fire. But let’s not dignify Foy’s imbecilic comment by parsing it. She demonstrates as clearly as “radio host” Carol “Sunshine” Sullivan — who urged blacks to kill a white person and take a “trophy” photo — what is wrong with this movement.
If Obama truly seeks to be relevant in this open season on police, he could do so by asking Black Lives Matter to cool its heels. Maybe he’ll do just that in his next State of the Union address.
