A rather alarming graph published in the Baltimore Sun over the weekend shows a sudden and precipitous drop in the number of arrests in Charm City since the seemingly botched arrest and subsequent death of Freddie Gray. The graph, reproduced below, reveals 2,677 arrests in April, which contrasts sharply with a mere 1,177 in May. And don’t even get the statisticians started on the decline in arrests in 2015 as compared with the previous year.
None of this should come as much of a surprise in the wake of criminal indictments being brought prematurely against the six officers implicated in Gray’s death by state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby, who seemed more interested in placating the black community than in pursuing justice.
Yesterday, Mosby was caught off guard and appeared annoyed during a press conference when Fox News producer Griff Jenkins questioned her loyalties to the men in blue. “Rank and file cops have said that you don’t have their backs,” he said, asking, “What would you like to say to them?”
“I’m not going to comment on that,” Mosby replied brusquely before contradicting herself and issuing this comment:
I come from five generations of police officers. That’s absurd. Of course I have – I work with the police department. We rely on the police department to get these violent repeat offenders off of our streets. That’s absurd.
Shorter Mosby: Some of my best friends are cops.
Jenkins went on to ask her whether she planned to recuse herself from the case, as some have suggested. She turned her back and walked away without acknowledging the question.
A video the exchange follows.
This is not the first time that a representative of local government took umbrage at questions from Fox. In late May reporter Leland Vittert questioned Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake aggressively about an unprecedentedly large number of murders in the city over Memorial Day weekend. Blake responded by calling Vittert “rude.”
