Would the Secret Service be doing a better job to protect the president if he were white (OK, all white, or at least white looking). That preposterous idea was floated on Sunday by Bob Schieffer of CBS’s “Face the Nation.” To his credit, Elijah Cummings, Schieffer’s guest, refused to take the (race) bait.
Cummings (D-Maryland) is ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, which has been investigating the recent fence jumping incident that led ultimately to the resignation of Secret Service director Julia Pearson.
His interview with Schieffer was mildly informative and remained focused on the facts until around 3:41 in the video below (h/t Mediaite). It was this point that Schieffer injected race into the discussion, saying:
You know, there are these reports — and I know you’re aware of them — in the black community that a lot of African Americans are worried that the president is not being protected because he’s an African American and that this wouldn’t be the case if he were white.
Cummings replied that “85% of all African Americans that come to me mention what you just said,” but added, “I don’t agree with it” and went on to explain why. “We have information,” he said, “that this goes all the way back to the Bush administration.”
Not to mention the Reagan administration or, for that matter, the administration of John F. Kennedy, neither of whom was available for comment.
Cummings went on to acknowledge that “the president’s people have told me that he feels very comfortable. He feels good about [the Secret Service], and most importantly the First Lady feels good about it.” It is sad that the majority of blacks, assuming Cummings’s estimate to be accurate, believe the security glitches are race-driven, but maybe that’s because people like Schieffer and the rest of the mainstream media keep feeding them a steady diet of racist innuendo.
