Vehicle thefts fall 21 percent

“According to data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, vehicle thefts in the US fell 21 percent in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year. The bureau previously reported that vehicle thefts fell more than 20 percent between 2024 and 2025, reaching their lowest level in decades,” notes Human Progress.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau adds:

“A total of 268,415 vehicle thefts were reported to law enforcement during the first six months of 2026. The United States experienced a vehicle theft rate of approximately 77.81 thefts per 100,000 people during the first two quarters of the year.

The decline was widespread, with all 50 states recording year-over-year percentage decreases in vehicle thefts during the first half of 2026, extending a broader downward trend in vehicle thefts seen in recent years.”
