The husband of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was arrested Wednesday after she was found dead inside their residence, police said.
Coral Springs Police Department (CSPD) officers attended the residence on the 800 block of Northwest 127th Avenue for a well-being check and located Nancy deceased inside, according to a Coral Springs press release. Shortly after officers made the tragic discovery, they apprehended her husband, Stephen Bowen. He faces charges of premeditated murder and tampering with physical evidence, according to court records obtained by the Miami Herald.
Stephen Bowen allegedly shot his wife to death and wrapped her body in garbage bags. She was 38 years old.
The CSPD said they are not seeking other suspects in the case at this time, and are investigating Nancy’s murder as a domestic incident. Stephen, 40, is being held at Broward County’s main jail, court records said.
Sources close to the situation told the Miami Herald that Nancy was planning for the future, and was preparing to announce her run in the Democratic primary for Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s seat. Cherfilus-McCormick has been charged with the theft of disaster relief funding, according to the outlet.
Commissioner Joshua Simmons issued a statement about her passing.
“Nancy was our battle buddy. She had a good heart,” he said, according to the Miami Herald.
“She truly cared about people even when people were saying some of the most horrible things about her and us. She still cared, rolled up her sleeves went to every event that she could go to,” Simmons continued. (RELATED: London Judge Lauds Barron Trump For Calling Cops On Man Sentenced For Attacking Woman)
Nancy first won election in 2020 as a city commissioner and was reelected in 2024 before being appointed to a second, one-year term as vice mayor in November 2025. She was also the Florida Democratic Party’s Vice Chair of Haitian Outreach, according to a party statement.
