Former President Joe Biden underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from his forehead.
A Biden spokesperson told The Hill Thursday that the former president underwent a procedure known as Mohs surgery, which involves removing thin layers of skin until no signs of cancer remain. The Associated Press — first to report the news — quoted Biden’s spokesperson, Kelly Scully, confirming the procedure after Inside Edition published a video showing Biden leaving a Delaware church with a noticeable gash on his forehead.
Prior to Biden’s term in the White House, the former president had non-melanoma skin cancers removed, as well as a cancerous lesion removed from his chest during a 2023 physical exam, according to The Hill.
While it is unclear when the procedure was conducted, Biden’s recent surgery comes just months after the former president’s personal office announced his battle with prostate cancer.
On May 18, Biden’s personal office revealed Biden had been diagnosed with “a more aggressive form” of prostate cancer that had already metastasized to the bone. (RELATED: Biden’s SEC Chair Gary Gensler Wiped Phone While Probing Wall Street’s Deleted Texts)
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” according to the May statement. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
The Biden family has previously faced other cancer battles over the years. The former president’s eldest son Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015. Additionally, former First Lady Jill Biden had two cancerous lesions removed, according to AP News.
Concerns over Biden’s mental fitness began before he entered office in January 2021, including criticisms of his speech and physical stumbles. Some Democrats initially brushed aside those concerns. Other members of the party, however, turned on Biden after his disastrous debate against then-former President Donald Trump in June 2024.
Biden’s personal office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
