“Tehran’s residents woke up to a skyline shrouded in black smoke and acid rain clouds after Israeli airstrikes set ablaze key fuel depots serving one of the Middle East’s largest cities,” reports Bloomberg News:
Multiple videos posted on social media show massive fires dominating the horizon, in the west, south and north of the city…oil storage facilities had been attacked by enemy aircraft, causing large volumes of oil and fuel to burn well into the night….
The attacks on essential infrastructure mark an escalation in the war as Iran continues strikes on Gulf Arab countries — including a desalination plant in Bahrain — and rejects calls from US President Donald Trump for an unconditional surrender. Iran said the US was the first to strike an Iranian desalination plant.
A CNN reporter in Tehran reported it was “raining oil” on Sunday morning and later posted a video from the Shahran oil depot in northwestern Tehran showing thick plumes of smoke billowing from the site….Iran’s Red Crescent Society warned residents not to leave their homes because of high levels of toxic pollution caused by the strike on the fuel depots. They cited a risk of lung and skin disease from acid rain and told people not to leave even after the rain has stopped because its evaporation was also causing high levels of toxicity in the air.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has just been installed as Iran’s new supreme leader, by an assembly of powerful Iranian theocrats. As supreme leader, he will outrank Iran’s president, who has only limited authority.

Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, headed a repressive regime that killed tens of thousands of its own people, including at least 35,000 in the 2025-2026 protests against his regime. Throughout his rule, Khamenei oversaw the brutal repression of various protests, including the 2009 Green Movement, the 2019 “Bloody November” protests, and the 2022-2023 “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests.

Since the creation of Iran’s “Islamic Republic” in 1979, Iran’s government has been deeply hostile to the United States. Iran held many American diplomats hostage for 444 days in 1979-81. It also orchestrated the bombing of U.S. marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983, killing more than 240 American troops.

The U.S. military announced the death of another U.S. service member, bringing the total killed in combat to at least seven.
