Prominent law professor blames Harris loss on ‘white supremacy’ and ‘toxic masculinity’

In the 2024 election, Donald Trump easily carried many predominantly Hispanic rural areas like Hidalgo County, Texas, and some mostly non-white precincts, such as mostly Asian areas of Brooklyn. As journalist Josh Kraushaar noted, “Trump carried PASSAIC County, New Jersey. Majority/Hispanic electorate and home to a sizable Orthodox Jewish constituency. Was a Dem stronghold for as long as I’ve been covering politics.” Trump did better with Asians and Hispanics than he did in 2020 or 2016, and did better with non-whites than Mitt Romney did in 2012.

But Democratic academics depicted Trump voters as “white supremacists” anyway.

Jed Shugerman, a prominent law professor at Boston University, wrote Wednesday that the reason Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election was “toxic masculinity” and “white supremacy.”

“Anyone blaming Harris or Walz today has utterly lost the plot & missed the point. This is fundamentally about America, toxic masculinity, & white supremacy. Blaming Harris would be part of that problem, not the solution,” Shugerman said on X early this morning. “She deserves our thanks. Thank you, Kamala Harris.”

In a follow-up post, he argued Harris “ran a solid, energetic, inspiring, strategic, & disciplined campaign in less time than anyone in modern US history. You made us proud to be on the right side of history and the humane side of humanity.”

Thousands of progressives reposted his post, and more than 169,000 people viewed it today. He said:

Shugerman is a mainstream Democrat, a contributor to The New York Times who has a regular column in Slate.

On his blog, he had predicted a Harris victory on Tuesday morning. “Prediction: Harris-Walz 292-246. Blue wall plus NE2 (which gets to 270), plus very close wins in NC and NV,” he said. In reality, Harris lost to Trump in North Carolina, Nevada, and the other battleground states.

Shugerman is frequently cited by other legal scholars about constitutional provisions, and has submitted to the courts “amicus briefs on the history of presidential power, the Emoluments Clauses, the Appointments Clause, the First Amendment rights of elected judges, and the due process problems of elected judges in death penalty cases.”

On Tuesday night, an English instructor at the University of South Carolina stated that Trump supporters have “poor literacy skills” and are “uneducated” people holding America “hostage.” “There is a reason why educated people vote blue. What we’re seeing is the uneducated population of America holding the rest of the country hostage. This is why there’s such a push to weaken education, ban books, and outlaw the teaching of Black history by the Republican Party,” she wrote.
