Ban on puberty blockers is lawful, English high court rules

In the United States, the Biden administration has promoted the use of puberty blockers for children as part of “gender affirming care,” even though the FDA has warned that puberty blockers can cause brain swelling and permanent vision loss.

But overseas, even left-leaning governments recognize that this is an extreme position that is not supported by scientific evidence. Britain’s Labour Party government, which supports LGBTQ rights, is welcoming a recent court ruling that upheld restrictions on using puberty blockers to treat children with gender dysphoria. Those restrictions were imposed earlier this year by Britain’s Conservative Party government, before voters replaced it with a Labour Party government in the 2024 elections:

A ban on puberty blockers introduced by the previous government using emergency legislation was lawful, the High Court has ruled. Former health secretary Victoria Atkins curbed the use of the drugs for children and young people with gender dysphoria under emergency powers at the end of May. A trans campaign group then took legal action, arguing that she had failed to consult patient groups and misused the emergency process.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he welcomed the court ruling, adding that children’s healthcare must be “evidence-led”. Campaign group TransActual UK said it condemned the decision by the High Court and would try to appeal.

The case follows the review by Hilary Cass earlier this year which found a lack of evidence around treatment for under-18s with puberty-blocking drugs. Puberty blockers are drugs used to delay or prevent puberty happening. In March 2024, NHS England decided that puberty blockers would no longer be routine treatment for children with gender dysphoria. At that point, puberty blockers were only allowed to be used in NHS clinical trials. In May, following the Cass Review, the Conservative government tightened rules on the drugs, introducing an emergency ban on them being prescribed by private and European prescribers….

Following the High Court ruling, Mr Streeting said he welcomed the decision. “Children’s healthcare must be evidence-led,” he said. “Dr Cass’s review found there was insufficient evidence that puberty blockers are safe and effective for children with gender dysphoria and gender incongruence. “We must therefore act cautiously and with care when it comes to this vulnerable group of young people.”

In 2022, the FDA added a warning to the puberty blockers used by transgender children undergoing gender transitions. The warning was added after the FDA identified “a serious potential side effect” that can “cause a dangerous surge of spinal fluid pressure in the brain,” as well as “headaches, nausea, double vision, and even permanent vision loss.”

As health and science reporter Benjamin Ryan notes, medical authorities in “UK, Sweden, Finland, and now Norway as well,” have recommended against “prescribing puberty blockers and hormones to trans-identifying minors.” Yet, in America, gender clinics are giving teenagers double mastectomies and other sex-change operations in many states. The Biden administration has promoted puberty blockers.

If puberty blockers are given to a child early enough, that child will never experience an orgasm during his life, as even advocates of child gender transitions admit: “The president of WPATH admits that NONE of the boys who started puberty blockers at the onset of puberty have ever been able to have an orgasm as an adult.”

“An 18-year-old boy died when doctors tried to create a vagina for him using part of his colon. His colon was used because puberty blockers stopped growth of his genitals, which meant there wasn’t enough tissue to do the penile inversion surgery,” notes Chris Elston. A “trans teen died from vaginoplasty complications during landmark Dutch study used to justify child sex changes,” reports The Post-Millennial. “Major complications began within just 24 hours of the surgery.”
