Giant panda population rises 70% in the wild

The population of giant pandas in the wild has risen by more than 70%. China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration reported two weeks ago there are now 1,900 pandas in the wild compared to 1,100 in the 1980s.

China says this rising panda population is due to its conservative efforts. China established the Giant Panda National Park in October 2021, covering a total area of over 8,000 square miles that is home to 72 per cent of the wild giant panda population.

The area inhabited by giant pandas has grown from 3.5 million acres to 6.3 million acres since 2012.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has removed giant pandas from the “endangered” list, classifying them as merely “vulnerable” instead.

The population of giant pandas in zoos and research facilities has risen to 728, with 46 pandas successfully bred in captivity since 2023.

The genetic diversity of giant pandas has also improved.
