Progressive students call anti-communist North Korean defector a ‘liar,’ destroy flyers for her event

Progressive students at Syracuse University expressed opposition to an event highlighting the evils of communism featuring Yeonmi Park, a defector from communist North Korea. The event was hosted by the Young America’s Foundation and Syracuse College Republicans.

Park spoke at the event a week ago. She “has criticized concepts like political correctness, trigger warnings and ‘woke culture’ in her career,” reports the student newspaper, The Daily Orange.

Students destroyed flyers, covered flyers advertising the event with other flyers, and posted messages denouncing Park and the College Republicans on social media and in online forums.

In an online forum for Syracuse students, a student posted a photo of a torn flier. In response to the photo, another student wrote, “The b**ch is a liar and a fraud.” One comment pushed back, telling students, “Respect other people’s viewpoints.” In response, a progressive student wrote, “I don’t have to respect anyone.”

Progressive students at many colleges have endorsed socialism and communism, which Park criticizes.

Last September, Florida State University’s Students for a Democratic Society hosted “We Won’t Go Back,” a rally “supporting abortion and socialism.” A speaker at the rally stated that the “Capitalist state’s attack on reproductive rights has a very real material basis. They seek to repopulate the class of workers they exploit after over a million have died from COVID-19. U.S. imperialism is in decline.”
