The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground. —THOMAS JEFFERSON, 1788

China’s hypersonic missiles could make our aircraft carriers obsolete

The Washington Post’s Josh Rogin says China’s hypersonic glide missiles can defeat our aircraft carriers and missile defense systems, according to recently leaked Pentagon documents:

We spent thirty years building aircraft carriers and missile defense, and the Chinese built a missile for 1/100000 of the price that makes those things obsolete… It flies faster than sound… and they can maneuver it to hit our aircraft carriers as far as Guam. Half the Pacific is now no entry for our aircraft carriers if they decide to use these things.

Rogin says it is unlikely that China will invade Taiwan before 2027, given its plans to first de-dollarize its economy, make a thousand new nuclear weapons, and thoroughly prepare their forces for an invasion:
There are three things that the Chinese are doing. One is the invasion force which will take 3-4 years. Second is economic resilience; they saw the Putin sanctions and said not for us. Why do you think they are going around the world changing all of their business agreements out of US dollars? They are actively trying to protect themselves from sanctions. Three, they are building 1,000 new nuclear weapons. Why are they building 400 missile silos in the middle of China and 1,000 new warheads? They are building a nuclear deterrent, economic resilience, and an invasion force, and all of those things coalesce around 2027.
The Washington Post earlier reported:

China has tested and deployed a new longer-range hypersonic missile that is probably able to evade U.S. defenses, according to an overlooked top-secret document among those recently leaked. Now, the public can see what the American intelligence community already knew: China is quickly improving its capacity to strike thousands of miles from its shores and prevent the United States from intervening.

The Justice and Defense departments are investigating the leak of hundreds of U.S. intelligence documents, which include chilling revelations about the Ukrainian equipment shortfalls, backdoor Egyptian-Russian arms deals, Israeli spy agencies allegedly working against the country’s elected leaders, and internal South Korean security deliberations. (The Egyptian, Israeli and South Korean governments say this information is false.) Buried in the documents is also a key piece of intelligence regarding China’s progress in military technology.

According to a Feb. 28 top-secret report by the Joint Chiefs of Staff intelligence directorate, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had three days earlier successfully tested a new hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile called the DF-27.
