One more reminder of the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished. The 36-year-old driver of a BMW and his elderly mother had just finished donating items to a local charity in midtown Manhattan when their car was surrounded by a band of depraved teens on bicycles who proceeded to wreak havoc on the vehicle and threaten its passengers.

The incident occurred in broad daylight. The driver, who chose to be identified only as Max, told New York ABC affiliate WABC that he driving along peacefully when he “noticed this swarm of cyclists, tall, young kids just weaving in and out of traffic and kind of surrounding the car.

We got to the point where they were in front of me and they were on either side of me and behind me, and I’m probably going like seven or eight miles an hour.

That’s when all hell broke lose. “I started to open up the driver door but I was immediately surrounded on every side by these kids that have just gotten off their bikes and they started screaming, yelling, punching the car, hitting the hood of the car, just yelling, ‘get out, get out, open the [sic] roll down the window, roll down the window,'” Max told reporters. “When I didn’t, they started to take out their aggression on the car itself.”

The assailants hurled their bikes at the hood and windshield, then took turns jumping on the car. One of them kicked in the windshield, while others tore off the side mirrors.”

“But it was only once they started smashing the windshields as soon as the windshield broke, and the glass hit our faces and landed in our laps and I realized, like the ceiling is collapsing,” Max is quoted as saying. “And if they jump on it one more time they’re going to gain access to the car. My mom is on the phone with 911 dispatcher who probably couldn’t understand a word she was saying, but literally the words I can’t get out of my mind were ‘they’re going to kill us, we are going to die. Please send help.'”

As to what precipitated the attack, there are competing theories. One is that one of the cyclists was doing a wheelie and crashed into the BMW when it slowed down. Another is that the rider was trying to “sleigh ride,” by grabbing hold of the car while it was moving and coasting along with it.

There is still no explanation for a similar attack on a taxi by the same group earlier in the day. The driver of that vehicle was seriously injured when he emerged from the car and was struck with a bicycle that one of the thugs hurled at him.

Police nabbed one of the assailants, a 15-year-old, late in the afternoon.

At the end of the video of the incident, which follows, Max waxes philosophical, telling reporters, “We need to look forward, we need to look at what we did wrong so people can express themselves so they aren’t this angry.”

Look at what we did wrong? Said like a true believer in white privilege.
