What’s he been smoking? The majority of candidates vying from his party’s nomination want to decriminalize border crossings by illegal aliens and provide them with free (read “taxpayer-funded”) health care. About the only position further left of where the Democrats currently stand would be to make illegals some sort of “super citizens” who would enjoy more rights than native-born Americans. Yet, Pete Buttigieg thinks the Dems are currently “playing it safe” and that the only way to defeat Donald Trump in 2020 is to tack even further left.
He said as much at a campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday:
Pete Buttigieg speaks in Sioux City, IA: "[President Trump] wins again if we look like we're offering more of the same… What that means is surprisingly, the riskiest thing we could do is try so hard to play it safe that we continue to walk down an establishment path." pic.twitter.com/EXXwRiGx0I

As for the part about Trump being “deservedly unpopular,” Mayor Pete should double-check his facts before speaking out. According to a newly released Washington Post-ABC News poll, Trump is currently enjoying the highest approval of his presidency at 47%, having jumped up five points from where it was in April. In fact his most recent Gallup approval rating is actually higher than Barack Obama’s at the same point in his presidency.
