Victims of Trump Derangement Syndrome who show their support for the president via their choice of headwear are getting younger. The most recent victim is 14-year-old Gunnar Johansson of Martin County, Fla. The boy was assaulted on the morning of March 5 when he boarded a school bus wearing a Make America Great Again cap.
It was Hat Day, and Johansson had decided to wear a hat, as did other students, in support of the March of Dimes, according to West Palm Beach CBS affiliate WPEC. But the particular cap that he chose touched a nerve in bus aide Delores Matheny, who is black. After she demanded repeatedly that the child remove the hat and he refused, she tore it off of his head. Matheny later protested that she had “gently” removed the hat, but the bus security video confirms Johansson’s version of what went down.
Matheny has since apologized and admitted to overreacting, but the school district says it is investigating, telling reporters:
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
The District is aware of the family’s allegation, we take it very seriously, and we are currently gathering all of the facts as part of our investigation. To protect the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment beyond that.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has also opened an investigation to determine if there was intent and whether will Matheny will face any criminal charges.
The lingering question is where — and when — this will all end. Trump haters have invested so much misplaced energy in their exaggerated belief that the president is evil incarnate that they’re willing to a assault a middle schooler as if they are carrying out an exorcism. Who will be next?
