Delaware’s Sarah McBride becomes first openly transgender state senator

Delaware has elected the United States’ first openly transgender state senator.

Democrat Sarah McBride was elected to serve the state’s First Senate District, making her the highest-ranking transgender politician in the country.

“I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too,” McBride said in a tweet. “As Delaware continues to face the Covid crisis, it’s time to get to work to invest in the policies that will make a difference for working families.”

McBride ran on a campaign of expanding health care access, improving education and supporting education.

The first openly transgender person to serve in any state legislature was Danica Roem, who was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017.
