UNCA on lockdown, students ‘nervous’ after email threats over Black Lives Matter mural

UNC Asheville chancellor Nancy J. Cable announced a campus shelter in place order Oct. 9 after what she said were direct threats made to several university offices.

“During the night several offices at the University received an email communicating a direct threat to members of the UNC Asheville community,” she said in a campus-wide alert.

The email sent to staff by an unidentified individual demanded the painting over of an on-campus Black Lives Matter mural, she said.

“A decision has been made to send a Bulldog Alert to all faculty, staff and students to shelter in place until further notice,” Cable said in the email. “We ask that employees, other than essential personnel, stay away from campus today.”

She said the campus would not reopen before the morning of Oct. 10.
