Facebook names global politicians and activists to new appeals board

A Yemeni Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the former prime minister of Denmark and a retired U.S. federal judge will join a group that will make final rulings on whether Facebook posts violate the platform’s standards on nudity, hate speech and insensitivity.

Facebook Inc. and its new content oversight board on Wednesday announced the names of the first 20 members of the group, an independent body endowed with $130 million from the company. The appeals board, designed to be both ideologically and geographically diverse, will initially review only complaints by people arguing their posts have been wrongly removed from the platform, not complaints about posts that Facebook hasn’t removed.

The board’s recommendations on specific pieces of content will be binding with few exceptions, and are meant to serve as precedent for the platform in handling similar cases on its own.
